• The Governing Council held today has given the green light to the concession for a new IAC hangar for aircraft painting.
• A startup shows its interest in settling in the complex and promoting an innovation center in urban air mobility.
The Teruel airport already has a new facility in the industrial zone consisting of a 5,000 square meter and 10 meter high warehouse that was inaugurated today by the Minister of Development, Housing, Logistics and Territorial Cohesion and president of the Consortium, Octavio López, the largest logistics space built so far at the airport, which is planned to be operated by the aeronautical company Airbus with an annual fee of 105,500 euros plus VAT. The project and work of this new warehouse was formalized in June 2023 to the UTE Urbialba S.L. – Emipesa S.A. for an amount of 1,749,601.11 euros and an execution period of ten months. The work has been carried out within the established deadline and with the planned budget, with a final settlement of zero euros. The Governing Council of Teruel Airport has today approved the final certification of the work.
This is the third facility that Airbus will have at this airport, where it already has a warehouse of 900 square meters and another of 2,000, and will be dedicated to non-destructive testing and storage of aeronautical material.
AIRBORNE HANGAR PROJECT UPDATE
On the other hand, the Governing Council has approved putting out to tender the construction of a hangar and production facility for stratospheric zeppelins intended for the provision of telecommunications and space research services, after the project has been updated and the prices of the sector, resulting in an investment of 43,512,069.44 euros, compared to 36.6 million in the previous tender, which resulted in a single bidder who ended up resigning due to not being able to complete the corresponding documentation. This action will be financed with the Teruel Investment Fund (FITE) and could be carried out by the end of 2026.
According to the project, written by aeronautical engineer Pablo Senchermés, the aforementioned facility will be made up of three different areas: a goods reception area, a production area and a hangar. The building will have a rectangular floor plan measuring 376.20 x 70.80 meters. Its shape responds to the function it will house, with 3 formal typologies: gabled industrial warehouse with a height of 23.10 meters corresponding to the merchandise and production area, a barrel vault 57.10 meters high corresponding to the hangar area and a door box formed by a 6-sided polyhedral structure 57.10 meters high.
In front of the east façade of the hangar there will be a platform for the take-off of the airship with dimensions of 300 x 220 meters. In front of the west façade, a platform will be projected so that this type of vehicles can maneuver and reverse into the merchandise unloading area. On the south façade of the hangar there will be a series of parking spaces for workers, as well as two parking spaces for helium tank vehicles.
CONCESSION FOR A NEW IAC HANGAR
The Governing Council has also given the green light at today's meeting to the processing of the concession file for a 9,000 square meter space in the southern area of the IAC hangar to build another hangar, the cost of which will be borne by the company itself. The requested area responds to the need expressed by the Irish company to cover market demand in this sector of activity and with this new facility it will double its capacity, going from 20 to 40 painted aircraft per year.
In order to be able to expand the number of operations, IAC has requested the Consortium to implement a landing system with the appropriate technology for instrument approaches, such as GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems), which will ensure the landing of the aircraft whatever the conditions. meteorological conditions, which would result in a greater type of aircraft being able to operate at Teruel Airport. The Governing Council has proposed a file for the design of instrument flight procedures, which will be put out to tender in the coming months.
NEW COMPANY INTERESTED IN THE AIRPORT
Apart from the files approved by the Governing Council, the Consortium has granted authorization for the use of some land, after receiving the request from the Spanish startup Vertiports Network to develop and operate an Innovation Center in Urban Air Mobility (CIMAU) in your installations.
It is a company that develops a technological solution to adapt cities to this new type of mobility. As detailed by the company itself, its modular vertiport design can be adapted to any roof or urban space available to accept electric air taxi operations and services. In addition, their operations management and ticketing software will allow them to operate an on-demand air taxi service in cities that will use electric landing and vertical take-off aircraft. Vertiports Network has expressed its intention to build and begin the infrastructure certification process during 2025 in order to plan flight operations during 2026.
